A plain-language guide to an insurance review

A practical starting point for a more useful insurance discussion.

An illustrative situation

A household changes jobs, moves home, and starts a side business. Each change calls for a different set of insurance questions.

Why the details matter

Plain-language guides to life, home, auto, health, travel, and business insurance. Find your starting point, then ask better questions. The useful starting point is a description of what happens in practice: who is involved, where the activity happens, and which agreements or responsibilities sit behind it.

Three questions to take with you

  1. What risks are you trying to address, and what protection already exists?
  2. Which exclusions, conditions, and limits matter most to your situation?
  3. Who is authorised to advise on or arrange cover in your province?

Get the information together

Use current information. If a value, location, activity, or arrangement has changed, point that out rather than relying on the previous policy’s description.

  • Existing policies and benefit summaries
  • Changes to household or work
  • Priorities and questions to discuss
  • Renewal and start dates
  • Relevant contracts or eligibility information

Read the answer alongside the policy

A general explanation or a certificate may leave important questions unanswered. Ask which wording applies to the specific situation, what is excluded, and what you would need to do if something happened.

Before agreeing to cover

Confirm the named people or entities, start date, territory, limits, deductibles, reporting requirements, and total cost. Keep the proposal and answers for your records. Only the appropriately licensed provider can confirm an offer and arrange the policy.

In Canada, ask about the rules and provider availability in your province or territory. Financial Consumer Agency of Canada · Life insurance ↗
